Moon and June

Yeah, June. It's a good word to rhyme but because there is that 'Moon June' sensibility about the word I think probably a lot of people who write stay away from June. But June is good. I think June, the month, sets the tone for the rest of the summer. This June, so far, here in NYC, has been wet and cool. That's a good tone for me because the summers of high heat and humidity are a struggle to pass through. So I'm hoping this 'cool' tone is gonna last.
I'm gonna recommend two novels; one I've finished and one I'm in the middle of. The one I've finished is by Tom Wolfe and is called I AM CHARLOTTE SIMMONS. The one I am in the middle of is by Sylvia Plath and is her only novel called THE BELL JAR. Both novels have the most interesting women in the lead roles and contain several similarities in their characters. Both Charlotte Simmons and Esther Greenwood are exceptionally intelligent women from small towns in the middle of nowhere. Both are in their last teenage years and have won scholarships to further their education. Both posess an intense mental ability to create their own special world to retreat to when life becomes too much to bear. Both are virgins. This fact significantly colors their points of view about men and how they behave with the opposite sex. The turmoil and joy that both women experience are valuable lessons to take to heart and learn from and this, I think, are criteria that makes a great novel.
My point, however, is that of all the novels to choose from, after I had finished the Tom Wolfe book, I chose THE BELL JAR. I think it's a very interesting syncronicity, if that's the word. I mean I didn't know anything about either of these books before I began to read them. It's almost like some professor had said read these two novels and then write a paper comparing and contrasting the two main characters. But, of course, there is no professor. When these kind of moments happen in life it makes me feel more connected to something. The Wheel, the Universe or at least something larger than my own world. That's a feeling that helps me continue. I attempt to 'grok' this information have it swirl in me so that at some point I am able to spew it back out in my song lyrics. A formula I choose to believe in is that creation = creation. Something had to come before to get something now.
I was at a party on a rooftop this June, I looked up past the clouds and saw the mysterious Moon.
